Adapting NieR:Automata from PS4 to Nintendo Switch
Adapting a demanding, visually rich PS4 RPG to the hardware-limited Nintendo Switch was an extraordinary technical challenge. Our team’s expertise in deep performance optimization and creative engineering enabled the game to run smoothly at 1080p/30 FPS in docked mode and 720p/30 FPS in handheld mode, delivering an experience remarkably close in quality and fidelity to the original PS4 release.
- Achieved impressive performance targets, balancing visual fidelity and stability on Switch’s hybrid hardware, overcoming significant CPU, GPU, and memory constraints through advanced optimization techniques
- Deep optimization of code, shaders, and assets to meet performance targets—achieving 1080p at 30FPS docked and 720p at 30FPS handheld with smooth, stable gameplay
- Enabled motion control support, enhancing gameplay accessibility and player immersion unique to the platform
- Developed exclusive content, including 2 new skins for pods and 6 additional outfits and 4 accessories, providing fresh customization options unavailable elsewhere
- Broadened accessibility with comprehensive text and language support expansions
- Employed a staggered adaptation pipeline with early analysis, proof of concept, detailed profiling, and rigorous QA to ensure high-quality delivery
The Nintendo Switch’s CPU, GPU, memory, and storage limitations posed severe challenges compared to the more powerful PS4. Virtuos implemented targeted optimizations to reduce the game’s memory footprint to fit the Switch’s 3.1 GB limit without compromising visual fidelity or gameplay fluidity.
Detailed profiling identified key bottlenecks related to CPU cycles, GPU draw calls, and texture memory, where improvements included:
- Optimizing draw calls and shader complexity
- Reducing geometry complexity and fine-tuning level of detail (LOD) settings
- Compressing textures and reworking memory-intensive assets
- Implementing dynamic resolution scaling in docked and handheld modes to maintain performance targets
Virtuos also innovated in replication of cinematic experiences by preserving the integrity of facial animations and cutscenes while accommodating hardware constraints, ensuring that the emotionally charged narrative moments remained impactful.
Recognizing the value of platform-specific enhancements, Virtuos developed multiple exclusive content pieces to elevate the Switch experience. The team created new skins for the in-game pods and crafted six additional character outfits aligned with the game’s narrative and aesthetic. These exclusives rewarded Switch players with fresh customization, further differentiating the version without altering core gameplay.
The successful adaptation of a high-profile game with demanding technical requirements highlights Virtuos Chengdu’s strengths in tackling difficult transitions between platforms. Through expert optimization, collaborative workflow integration, and creative content development, Virtuos helped Square Enix and PlatinumGames expand the reach of a beloved IP without compromise.
Our adaptive approach to pipeline management and cross-disciplinary coordination ensured timely delivery despite the project’s complexity and scale — a testament to Virtuos’ role as a reliable, technically adept co-development partner for AAA game projects.
“Our collaboration with Virtuos on the Nintendo Switch port of NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition yielded truly exceptional results.
The Virtuos team deeply understood our commitment to preserving the essence of the original game and flawlessly implemented the high-speed action at a stable 30fps—an achievement that earned high praise from Yoko-san, Taura-san, and Nintendo alike.
While we initially had some concerns whether an overseas studio could capture the nuance of the Japanese-themed DLC, the designs they presented were exactly what we had envisioned. Throughout the process, their close communication ensured that our meticulous attention to detail was fully reflected in the game. Ultimately, we were able to deliver a fresh and moving experience to the Nintendo Switch players.
We are deeply grateful for their partnership and sincerely look forward to the opportunity to work together again!”
