In a tightly compressed development schedule, Virtuos Shanghai succeeded in adapting Kena: Bridge of Spirits from the PS4 version to the Nintendo Switch 2, maintaining full feature and content parity with the original gameplay experience.
Our team seamlessly integrated Deluxe Edition and Pre-order Bonus content, refining associated gameplay logic to optimize the player experience on the new platform. To fully leverage Nintendo Switch 2’s capabilities, we defined and implemented a custom rendering pipeline, achieving stable 30 FPS performance in both docked and handheld modes while ensuring visual fidelity.
Virtuos also managed the adaptation of control schemes and vibration feedback tailored for Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2, implemented in-game language switching to support global sales regions, and designed custom button UI icons specific to the Switch 2 interface.
Alongside these features, we ensured compliance with all mandatory Nintendo Lotcheck requirements and supported the certification process, delivering a polished and certified title ready for launch.
Prior to the Switch 2 adaptation, Sparx* – A Virtuos studio provided comprehensive art production support for Kena: Bridge of Spirits during its original 2021 launch. Sparx* crafted extensive environment art, dynamic lighting and atmospheric VFX, detailed prop sets, and lush vegetation that together helped create the game’s rich, immersive worlds.
This high-quality art production supported Ember Lab in realising Kena’s distinctive visual identity and laid a strong foundation that continued to support the game’s ongoing success across multiple platforms.
“Working with Virtuos to bring Kena: Bridge of Spirits to Switch 2 was an absolute pleasure. The team was talented, pro-active, and highly organized and transparent with their approach. Most importantly, they took great care to ensure the experience would be awesome for the players and live up to our own expectations. We hope to work with them again and would highly recommend Virtuos as a partner to any developer.”
