Bringing the Legendary RuneQuest to Life
Volmi – a Virtuos studio partnered with Slitherine to transform Chaosium’s iconic 1978 tabletop RPG RuneQuest into RuneQuest: Warlords, a deeply strategic turn-based game set in the mystic Bronze Age world of Glorantha. This project marks the first-ever digital adaptation of the beloved RPG, aiming to deliver a rich tactical experience that faithfully preserves the original game’s soul while embracing modern gameplay standards.
- Full end-to-end co-development of the first-ever digital adaptation of the beloved tabletop RPG
- Creation of 29 unique units with carefully balanced abilities faithful to the original lore
- Development of 18 richly crafted single-player campaign levels with immersive narrative elements
- Deep collaboration with Slitherine and Chaosium to ensure authenticity and respect for the tabletop heritage
- Leveraging Virtuos’ proven expertise in turn-based strategy and complex game systems
Our team took full ownership of the game’s development, digitally recreating 29 unique units from the tabletop source, meticulously translating their abilities and identities to balance nostalgia with fresh strategic depth. We also designed and implemented 18 immersive campaign levels interwoven with narrative elements that bring Glorantha’s myth-infused world to life, offering a captivating 18-mission journey of tribal conflict, divine influence,
and cosmic stakes.
RuneQuest: Warlords breaks conventional fantasy molds, immersing players in a world where belief, runes, and spiritual allegiance shape warfare and identity. Players command tribal champions from Talastar, leading them against the Chaos hordes in battles that are as much about mythic destiny as tactical prowess. Volmi created the game’s three factions, Talastar, Chaos Hordes, and the Lunar Empire, to each offer unique mechanics and units reflecting Glorantha’s rich cultures and legends.
Co-developing alongside Slitherine, Volmi ensured that every element, from gameplay mechanics to storytelling, resonated with both longtime fans and new players. Our passion and respect for the source material drove us to create an experience that feels both faithful to the original tabletop and excitingly fresh for the strategy gaming community.
“I think the most remarkable achievement that the guys at Volmi made is that they received in engine,
and they started working on it, and in the space of 7/8 months they put together a very strong proposition already.
The team there is amazing.”
